This November sees the world-famous Laguna Phuket Triathlon celebrate its 25th anniversary and so we took the enjoy-able opportunity of speaking with Ms Prapa Henmin who is the Director of the Event and also Marketing and Corporate Events Director of the Laguna Group Phuket.

What are the key factors underpinning the 25-year success of the Laguna Triathlon?

The first race in 1994 was a unique made-for-television sporting event, showcasing Phuket to the world. It attracted just 284 competitors and was timed manually with stop watches!
Since then, the race has grown every year and is now renowned for its challenging technical bike course, parties and exceptional hospitality.

Key factors for LPT’s success include:
1. A beautiful, exotic destination race with a combination of beaches, lakes, hills, local villages and tropical scenery along the race courses and at transition areas and the Laguna Phuket resort.
2. It’s an end of season race in November, followed by holidays in Phuket and Thailand.
3. Exceptional Thai hospitality and integrated resources provided by the resort complex and volunteers from local communities.
4. Unique race distance of 1.8K swim, 50K bike and 12K run.
5. Community engagement and charitable platforms at the race.

The event is now globally recognized by elite pros, aspiring athletes and media as Asia’s premier destination triathlon event. Participation has grown from its humble start to more than 1,000 each year.

How do you foresee the Triathlon continuing to grow and expanding in future years?

Sports and healthy lifestyles are growing worldwide. In Asia Pacific alone, we’ve seen growth of sporting events similar to Laguna Phuket Triathlon in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. In Thailand, we’ve seen expansion of international branded triathlon races in many provinces, usually ones that feature unique and/or exotic “destination race” attributes.

In the past five years, we have noticed growing numbers of hotel guests, community members and resort associates enjoy using public area in and around Laguna Phuket for daily running, cycling and swimming as well as training for the resort’s marathon and triathlon.

What are the special features of this year’s Triathlon that will be in place to mark the 25th anniversary?

I’d like to invite all who are participating in this year’s Laguna Phuket Triathlon to help us celebrate the occasion by welcoming the first sprint-distance triathlon “25 For 25 Sprint”. Comprising 0.5K swim, 18.5K bike and 6K run at the resort, the Sprint race’s combined distance of 25 kilometers echoes LPT’s 25th anniversary.

Also, the LPT Charity Fun Run will occur on Saturday 17 November, following the success of its first edition last year. Runners participating in “Run for Fun, Run for Kids” will be joined by our Charity Ambassador, Thai actress and inspiring celebrity athlete Rachwin “Koy” Wongviriya.

The Run will inspire people to lead a healthier lifestyle and, at the same time The Charity Fun Run will raise funds for Children First Fund (CFF) in support of more than 400 underprivileged children at seven Phuket orphanages.
